Moroccan Foreign Minister

Rabat - The latest report of the US State Department on human rights in Morocco is ''truly outrageous',' and Morocco is forced to explore all possible ways to uncover the report's excesses, the Interior ministry said Tuesday.

''The content of the report of the State Department this year, published on April 13, 2016, is truly outrageous,” the ministry pointed out in a statement, citing the report’s ‘fabricated information’ and ‘incorrect assessment’.

''In recent years, the Moroccan government has continued to attract the attention of US authorities on the sloppy, biased and quirky character of the content of the State Department’s report on Human Rights,” the ministry recalled.

'Often, exclusive sources are unreliable and politically hostile. Inserted information is approximate and appreciations are unfounded,” the ministry added, noting that the report’s general conclusions are hasty.

''Nevertheless, Morocco, which is confident in the evolution of its societal model conceived and implemented by Moroccans and for Moroccans, and which does not accept lessons from anyone, was never allergic to constructive criticism,” the statement went on.

However, “Morocco cannot accept fabricated facts and false claims intended for obscure political motivations,” the source added.

The Ministry of Interior noted that the report was at the heart of talks in recent weeks between the Minister of Interior Mohamed Hassad and the US Ambassador to Morocco Dwight Bush.

“Tangible evidence has been provided to demonstrate the fallacy of the report's allegations,'' the statement added.

“Yet, a dialogue process, unique of its kind in the region, has been established since 2006 with Moroccan authorities. This process has been required by Morocco, although it is not obliged to do so and it is not accountable to any foreign country,” the source pointed out.

"This process responds quickly and throughout the year to questions, provides comprehensive information on cases and makes available all requested documentation. It is now legitimate to question the relevance and usefulness of such a dialogue,'' the statement said, noting ''unfortunately today the report is not an information tool for the Congress but a political instrument in the hands of people devoid of rigor”.

In light of the failure of US interlocutors to answer arguments and protests from Moroccan authorities, for several years, Morocco is forced to explore all the possible ways to uncover the report’s excesses,” the ministry said, adding that “the Kingdom is ready to go all the way and bring the issue before the highest authorities at the various American national institutions.''

"Morocco hopes that American partners will work with the Moroccan government to restore truth and denounce manipulations and lies", the statement concluded.
