Taroudante - Moroccan authorities arrested a suspected terrorist for alleged links with ISIS.
Morocco’s Central Bureau of Judicial Investigation (BCIJ) arrested this morning near Nador, in the northeast of the country, a suspected terrorist, who was allegedly prearranging to join ISIS and preparing to carry out terrorist attacks in Morocco or Europe.
According to a statement by the Ministry of Interior, the suspected terrorist was arrested on November Saturday in Laroui, a small town near Nador in the Rif region.
Without providing more details, the statement said that the alleged jihadist admitted during a hearing session that he “was preparing to join the ranks of the so-called Islamic State, and carry on terrorist acts in Morocco or Europe.”
The arrest came a day after the Paris terrorist attacks, which claimed the lives of 153 people and left more than 250 people injured.
Following the deadly terrorist attacks that shook Paris on Friday night, Moroccan anti-terrorist services have been placed on high alert and mobilized to face any potential terrorist threats.
A ranking issued by the British Foreign Office earlier this month ranked Morocco among the safest countries worldwide, and the safest country in the MENA region.
The BFO ranking said Morocco has lower risk of terrorist threats than France and Spain. The North African country was placed at lever 3 “average” threat, while France was placed at level 4 where the terrorist risk is “high”.
