New Delhi - Morocco adopted an innovative approach to counter terrorism and extremism, said foreign minister Salaheddine Mezouar on Thursday.
"Morocco has adopted an innovative approach to fighting terrorism based on three essential elements – security, social and economic development to fight poverty and promotion of moderate Islam to counter extremist ideology," Mezouar told on Thursday Indian paper "The Times of India".
"No development project can succeed if it doesn’t take into account peace and security. Morocco has always played and continues to play a major role in efforts to protect Africa from the dangers of terrorism, cross-border organized crime and illegal immigration," the Moroccan official added.
He went on to say that "both India and Morocco need to jointly face terrorism and adopt a comprehensive approach through initiatives like exchange of intelligence, recalling that HM King Mohammed VI announced, recently in New Delhi at the 3rd India-Africa Forum Summit, that Morocco is ready to set up a joint working group to this effect.
In this regard, the minister said that his Majesty holds great esteem for India, a country which played a leading role in the Non-Aligned Movement, noting that HM the King "has expressed many times his profound admiration for the success of India’s unique development model, which has allowed it to join the big emerging powers."
He also underlined that India’s foreign policy is characterized by a balanced approach, a sense of respect for international norms and territorial integrity and the defense of interests of developing countries.
Regarding Africa, Mezouar stressed that Morocco has partnerships with African countries in social sectors like health, urban development and social housing as well as cooperation in finance, banking, insurance, telecommunications, infrastructure and mining, noting that, through such projects, the Kingdom has become the top African investor in East Africa and the second largest at the continent level.
