Rabat - King Mohammed VI arrived in Bourget, France for the United States Conference on Climate Change (COP21) on November 29th to discuss the global effort in addressing climate change.
"A political moment like this may not come again," U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon told attendees of the conference. He added "We have never faced such a test. But neither have we encountered such great opportunity."
The Moroccan delegation had 250 participants. Among this team includes, members of parliament, environmental and economic experts. Businesspeople from the country’s private sector will also attend to represent their respective industries.
The Moroccan delegation plans to focus issues vital to its environmental and economic growth, such as the renewable energy sector, access to clean water and recycling.
COP is an international conference held to address global warming. Over 150 countries are present this year. Over 10,000 people, including delegates, observers and journalists are predicted to attend the conference, making it one of the world’s largest climate change conferences.
The king has been active in this conference, having attended the first one on Copenhagen in 1992 when he was a prince.
This will also being the largest diplomatic meeting held in France. 2,800 law enforcement and military personal will be present due to the threat of terrorism. There will also be a moment of silence dedicated to those killed in attacks on Paris on November 13th.
Morocco will be hosting next year’s conference in Marrakesh. The country is already planning next year’s conference, including the logo and the main topics. The government also presented interactive display at the conference to highlight to plans for COP22.
