Rabat - Moroccan students will begin studying English, as a part of a newly enhanced language curriculum, according to statement made by Rachid Belmokhtar, the Minister of National Education and Vocational Training, during his visit to the Abu Abbas Sebti secondary school in Marrakech on Thursday.
The minister accompanied Ahmed Lakrimi, the academic director for the Marrakesh-Asfi region, to the school’s English club, where they jointly commended the English teachers for their work in helping Moroccan students achieve proficiency in one of the most widely spoken languages on Earth.
“For Moroccans today, the English language is an important goal,” the minister said. “The ministry [of education] has implemented an important program which will begin in primary school and teach English language to students.”
Belmokhtar added that the 149 English language clubs around the country will help execute the new program.
Abdulkabir Afkirane, the director of the school, said the program started in January and was adopted soon afterwards by the Moroccan Organization for English Teachers. The organization started the English club at the high school in order to strengthen language skills and intercultural understanding. Other schools in the region have begun emulating the model over the past couple of months, the director said.
The club engages students in discussions on topics such as violence and drugs in order to ensure they learn political, as well as interpersonal vocabulary, Afkirane said.
