New York - Ambassador Omar Hilale, Permanent Representative of Morocco to the United Nations, reiterated Morocco's commitment in the fight against drug production, trafficking and use.
Speaking at the special session of the General Assembly on the World Drug Problem at the UN headquarters in New York, Hilale said that because of its geographical position, the Kingdom is constantly confronted with drug trafficking, which exacerbated in recent years by interconnection with transnational criminal organizations.
Moroccan authorities made big efforts and mobilized resources in the fight against criminal smuggling and trafficking networks, he said, adding that "the aim is also to ensure the monitoring and control of the kingdom's borders and coasts."
Thanks to efforts made by Morocco, which were hailed by the International Narcotics Control Board and the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime, cannabis cultivation decreased by 65 pc since 2003, the diplomat pointed out.
Hilale stressed the importance of rehabilitating national and international strategies in the fight against this scourge.
The special session of the General Assembly should thus lead to specific answers and an operational roadmap to address the common concerns of the international community, he said.
The three-day session kicked off with the adoption by the 193-member body of the new framework on countering the world drug problem, drafted last month in Vienna by the Commission on Narcotic Drugs (CND), the UN’s top policy-making body on the issue.
The document recognizes that to address and counter the world drug problem, appropriate emphasis should be placed on individuals, families, communities and society as a whole, with a view to promoting and protecting the health, safety and well-being of all humanity.
