Myriam Fares

By Umnia Rais

Rabat - After the performances given by Arab and foreign Stars – Kadim Al Sahir, Chris Brown, Diana Haddad, and Rokia Traoré – the Eastern Stage of the Mawazin festival hosted the Lebanese star, Myriam Fares, last night.

At first, Myriam Fares appeared in a luxurious white dress and carried signs “Nidae Sawt El Hassan,” the symbolic song of the Green March. Afterwards, she received the Moroccan flag and wrapped it around her shoulders and continued singing. The audience was delighted and sang together the Moroccan national anthem.

“I have been attached to this country, its land, and its people since the first time I set foot here,” Myriam said to the crowd, referring to “the stability of the kingdom and the peace that prevails.”

The Lebanese star sang in several dialects of the Arab world, which reflected the diversity of her repertoire; “Kifak Enta,” “Khalani,” “Waheshni Eh,” and “Mashi Brahtak.”“With my band, we like to sing in several musical styles and honor different cultures,” she added later.

As expected, the song “Tlah” arrived just before the first break of the concert. The song in Darija revived the public energy, and that reached its peak when a Gnaoua folklore troupe joined Myriam on the stage. The singer then took few minutes to disappear to change her dress.

Lastly, Myriam Fares sang the Moroccan song “Elash ya Ghezali,” by Fathallah Lamghari, and the public was enthralled.

Myriam certainly did perform well by giving a concert without faults and not forgetting to interact with the Moroccan audience to ensure a good ambiance.

Rabat - Morocco’s Foreign Minister, Salaheddine Mezouar, was caught on tape dancing to the rhythms of the Australian rapper Amethyst Amelia Kelly, known professionally as Iggy Azalea, during her performance in the Mawazine Festival, at the stage of the OLM Souissi in Rabat.

The Moroccan minister was seen in casual clothes shaking his head to the beats of the rap music that engulfed the OLM Souissi in Rabat.

He was filming the Australian rapper with his iPhone 6 while she was performing.

The performance of Azalea was widely reported to be a success. In attendance were prominent politicians and businessmen, including Loic Morin, CEO of Sopriam, the exclusive importer and distributor of Peugeot and Citroën in Morocco.

In a short video posted Friday on the festival’s official Facebook page, the Australian rapper was filmed browsing traditional sandals at the entrance of shops in Rabat.

In an interview with The National, Azalea said that she loves Morocco’s interior design and that she bought some rugs.

"I bought like 10 rugs. I really love interior design. I am very lucky that I have a big house, and I have a lot of different rooms that I can go crazy with. I have been seeing a lot of different craftsmen, vases, and pottery and go buy [sic] something for my home."

New Horizons of Muslim Diaspora in North America and Europe, New Book Edited by Moha Ennaji

New Horizons of Muslim Diaspora in North America and Europe copy

Rabat - “New Horizons of Muslim Diaspora in North America and Europe” is the title of a new book edited by the Moroccan university researcher and author Moha Ennaji.

The book, which is in 282 pages, has recently been published by the US prestigious publishing house Macmillan-Palgrave.

The book explores the situation of the Muslim communities in North America and Europe, with the participation of sixteen international experts and scholars. In addition to its theoretical perspective, the book includes an empirical dimension and case studies about Muslims in Canada, the United States, France, the Netherlands, Italy, Germany, and Britain, for the purpose of comparison.

The book deals with issues related to freedom of religion and human rights, cultural diversity and its role in the consolidation of democracy, development and social cohesion in the Western world. It focuses on the Muslim diaspora in Europe and North America, and the challenges facing Muslim minorities, as well as their contribution to sustainable development and dialogue between religions in the host countries.

This book aims to expose readers to scholarship on Islam and Muslims in Europe and North America, and to the wider historical and structural processes that have set the stage for the formation of Muslim minorities in these Western societies. It also aims to help readers and students cultivate a greater command over current trends in social analysis and theorization about citizenship, integration of Muslims in secular states and the emergence of a European and American Islam.

Another major goal of this book is to open new avenues of thought and other prospects to move to another phase of the debate on Muslim diaspora that would link policy based on cultural difference to democratic culture and to social justice.

The objective also is to deepen knowledge about Muslim communities in Western countries, the ways their cultures intersect with the West, and their contribution to democracy, diversity, development and social cohesion in the West.

The book criticizes the essentialist approach to the concept of culture which reduces all diasporic Muslims to one category and ignores other important factors that shape the attitudes and behaviors of Muslims in the West, particularly their socio-economic status, gender, age, education, social class, and attitude toward religion and the Western lifestyle. The majority of Muslims in North America and Europe are reluctant to be reduced to 'Muslim,' although some of them feel obliged to accept the label. In this volume, the various chapters reveal that diasporic Muslims are heterogeneous given their diverse cultures and ethnicities; they are actually divided, not united, and have different views and interpretations of Islam and various attitudes and representations of Western realities. Due to their marginalization and often low social status, some Muslims turn to religion and traditional values and practices to overlook for their socio-economic exclusion from the European or American society.

The book is divided into four broad parts: i) historical and anthropological background of Muslim diaspora, ii) Muslim diaspora, cultural diversity, and shifting identities Issues , iii) reflections on Muslim diasporic women, and iv) aspects of integration, discrimination, and Islamophobia. Each part brings to light a particular outlook and includes enlightening chapters that discuss relevant topics such as ethnicity, diversity, family, food, gender relations, and case studies on Muslim communities in Europe and North America.

Moha Ennaji is a prominent Moroccan academic with research interests in culture and society, migration, gender issues, and linguistics. He is co-founder and president of the International Institute for Languages and Cultures at Fès, Morocco. He has numerous publications on linguistics, cultural studies, migration, education, and women’s studies. His most recent books include: “Multiculturalism and Democracy in North Africa” (Routledge, 2014), and “Muslim Moroccan Migrants in Europe” (Palgrave, 2015).

The Minister of Higher Education, Scientific Research and Training, Lahcen Daoudi

By Umnia Rais

Rabat - The Minister of Higher Education, Scientific Research and Training, Lahcen Daoudi, is expected to attend the Commission of Education and Communication in the House of Representative today to discuss the upsurge of university violence in Morocco.

The debate was set after a sixteen-year-old girl was assaulted at the Faculty of Science at Moulay Ismail University in Meknes on May 18.

A group of students attacked the girl, who works in the university’s cafeteria, binding her hands, covering her eyes with a cotton shawl and forcibly shaving her hair in front of a crowd.

Six students who were suspected to have participated directly in the physical assault of the girl were arrested.

Acts of violence on Moroccan university campuses have increased in recent years.

In January, two students were killed in Marrakech and Agadir during clashes between Amazigh and Sahraoui students. In April 2014, a student was killed at the Faculty of Science of Fes, after being attacked with knives by a group of students.

Morocco Opens Its First Assisted Reproduction Center

Rabat - Morocco has launched its first center for Assisted Reproduction, a fertility center offering infertility treatment, a month after the country adopted a draft law relating to Assisted Reproductive Technology (ART).

According the Huffington Post Maroc, the new center was inaugurated on Friday at Ibn Sina University Hospital in Rabat.

The new center provides comprehensive medical care for the treatment of infertile patients. It will accompany patients from diagnosis to treatment.

The Government Council passed Bill No. 14-47 relating to Assisted Reproduction, which "aims to strengthen the national legal arsenal in the field of medical sciences and biomedical techniques and to fill in the legal vacuum regarding practices related to medically assisted reproduction,” said Mustapha El Khalfi, Minister of Communications and Spokesperson of the Government.

The bill imposes a requirement on health institutions, private centers, and professionals to have professional certification in order to practice the techniques of Assisted Reproductive Technology in accordance with predefined standards.

According to the same source, about 825,000 people in Morocco are affected by infertility – nearly one in eight couples.

Despite the government passing the law relating to this medical specialty, infertility is still not recognized as a health complication, and therefore is not covered by private insurance.

The services of this new center will help thousands of patients diagnose their infertility problems and hopefully provide the necessary care and follow up for couples to overcome the problem.

Geneva - Morocco supported on Tuesday in Geneva a Russian proposal to negotiate an international convention on curbing chemical and biological terrorism acts.

Speaking at the Disarmament Conference, Morocco's permanent representative to the UN, Ambassador Mohamed Aujjar said that this Russian proposal is a collective response to counter threats and fight chemical and biological terrorism.

The Kingdom shares concerns regarding the risk of acquiring chemical and biological weapons by terrorist groups that could endanger everyone, said the diplomate, noting that this poses a real threat and should be taken into consideration by the international community.

The ambassador recalled that Morocco is very attached to nuclear disarmament and deems it necessary to discuss any proposal likely to boost the conference's work.

"We encourage initiatives that could establish a climate of trust and lead substantive talks on all disarmament issues on the conference's agenda," he said.

Yves Saint Laurent Museum to Open in Morocco

Rabat - Studio KO founders Olivier Marty and Karl Fournier unveiled the first design plans for the new Yves Saint Laurent museum that will open in Marrakech, Morocco, in the autumn of 2017.

The new museum will host the work of the iconic French fashion designer Yves Saint Laurent and the Fondation Pierre Bergé-Yves Saint Laurent Paris collection.

The new structure will be built next to the wonderful garden “Jardin Majorelle,” a property co-owned by Saint Laurent, where his ashes were scattered after his death in 2008.

According to the Design Boom, the museum will feature a temporary exhibition space, a 130-seat auditorium, a bookshop and a research library that will focus on literature, botany, Berber culture, poetry and history.

The museum will also have a cafe-restaurant with a terrace.

Inside the building there will be a vast collection of YSL goodies, such as 5,000 clothing pieces and 15,000 haute couture accessories, as well as tens of thousands of sketches and assorted objects, all currently archived in Paris.

The same source added that the building’s exterior will have a look of cubic forms adorned with bricks that create a pattern resembling threads of fabric.

“The contrasting interior has been conceived like the lining of a luxurious couture jacket: luminous, velvety, and smooth,” the source said, adding that it will be built of “terracotta, an earthen colored terrazzo with stone fragments.”

"We designed the building like one would cut fabric for a dress, by composing curves and lines, in the fashion of the working drawings, white traced on black paper that we discovered in the designer's workshop and archives. Its façades would be wrapped in a brick trim, like a drape, a throw, a cape," said the architects.

Azoulay

Rabat - It is only in Morocco and nowhere else that Islam and Judaism could revisit, rebuild and deepen a relation and a closeness rooted in centuries of shared history, said, on Tuesday in Rabat, André Azoulay, HM King Mohammed VI's advisor.

"We are living a unique moment drawing on the national consensus which brings it boldly to all levels of our society and to all the segments of our diaspora in all parts of the world", said Azoulay at the north-American conference of the Moroccan-Jewish community, organized at the initiative of Sepharadic Legacy Series, in collaboration with the Tronto Moroccan Jewish community and the Mimouna Association.

"We should be aware of this long-awaited, new and exemplary reality," he said, recalling the commitment by all those who endeavored, since the 70s and mainly within the group "Identity and Dialogue", to rebuild our society on reciprocal recognition of our respective histories, mutual respect and a dialogue of truth bearing shared dignity and legitimacy.

"It is that kind of taboo-free, voluntary-based, crystal clear and resolved actions that made the Moroccan resilience and its long march towards diversity, pluralism and otherness, and helped it retrieve its place within our society," said Azoulay. He paid tribute to the “insightful leadership of HM King Mohammed VI for the success and durability of all these basic choices for Morocco's modernity.”

Morocco Made Considerable Progress in Understanding Critical Risks

Rabat - Morocco has, over the past 20 years, made considerable progress in understanding critical risks, mainly via a legislative and regulatory body, and the implementation of specific financial mechanisms.

This came in a review of risk management policies in Morocco, by the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), whose main findings and recommendations were presented in Rabat on Wednesday. The review has five main outlines related to the amelioration of resilience to natural disasters, namely governance, assessment and risk prevention, emergency management, recovery and reconstruction. Regarding governance of critical risks, the review wrote that Morocco made considerable progress in understanding critical risks, but these efforts have not yet led to the adoption of an integrated response.

It said that "deficiencies in governance still remain, such as policies that are too sector-based, or focused on a single risk, or not sufficiently inclusive, or using a top-down method."

OECD gave a series of recommendations, as building a long-term vision at the service of an integrated critical risk management strategy, implementing an institutional framework adapted to national governance with clear lines of responsibility, and modernizing the regulatory framework in order to adapt it to current and future challenges.
