Rabat - Moroccan meat and dairy products now banned from entering Spanish enclave Melilla amid food safety concerns.

To counter the spread of foot and mouth disease, the Ministry of Health banned imports from Maghreb on November 19.

Under the ban, any related meat or dairy products from the Maghreb, irrespective of the quantity, destination or whether it is for private consumption will not be allowed in or to travel through the town.

The ban also includes the transportation of straw and hay.

“In order to ensure the effective implementation of the new order, the controls will be intensified in the various border points but in the meantime no new instructions are received," the ministry said in a statement.

Foot and mouth, is a highly contagious viral animal disease, which affects cattle, goats and sheep.
