Outrage as Violence Erupts in Casablanca Stadium After Football Match

Rabat - Following the Wydad vs Raja of Casablanca football match on Sunday in Mohammed V stadium, fans of both teams engaged in a series of fights that ended up in a wave of violence and vandalism.

Moments after the 0-0 tie between both teams, supporters of the Wydad and Raja took their emotion way too far and began to hit and punch each other.

Several amateur videos of the incident have gone viral showing people jumping over the bleachers beating, kicking, punching and throwing over others, including the police who was forced to intervene.

The police intervened to calm the attackers, mostly young men, who behaved short of criminals and did not stop at hurting men, women and children.

Police had a hard time controlling the aggressive  assailants who even beat up a police officer throwing him over the stands.

The video shows the moment in which an officer armed with a shield gets kicked and dragged by the angry mob that showed no respect for the authorities.

Sunday’s match marked the most important game of the Moroccan soccer league, which ended in clashes described as “criminal” and where the healthy spirit of sport was lost.

The images and footage have caused an uproar across Morocco.

A game that should have ended in an amicable tie among Moroccans, ended instead hurting the values and principles of sports.

Moroccans took to social media to vent their outrage at the clashes that tarnishes the country’s image.

For Aziz Daouda, former Secretary General of the Royal Moroccan Athletics Federation and member of the IAAF’s Technical Committee, these acts vandalism mirror the failure of Morocco’s education system and the loss of fundamental values.

“I'm just appalled as an athlete but I also wonder about the causes and solutions,”  said in a statement to Morocco World News.

“I think the cause and the solutions must be sought in the bankruptcy of the educational system both in the state’s national education and or in families due to the loss of fundamental values that balance society in Morocco,” he added.
